How to make a word search
- Add your words. Type one per line, or pick a themed list such as Birds, Spring or In the kitchen and edit it freely.
- Choose a grid size. Ten or twelve squares across is comfortable for most readers. Larger grids hold more words but print with smaller letters.
- Pick the directions. Easy hides words only across and down. Medium adds diagonals. Hard also allows backwards words.
- Press Make puzzle. Press it again for a fresh random layout with the same words.
- Tick “Show answer key” to add a second page with every word shaded, then press Print.
The tool tells you roughly how tall the letters will print in points. Aim for 30 points or more for large print. If a word is too long for the grid, or does not fit, it is listed above the puzzle so you can fix it.
Choosing words and difficulty
- For low vision or memory care, use 8 to 10 short words, a 10 by 10 grid, Easy directions and Extra large type.
- For a general senior-center group, 12 to 15 words in a 12 by 12 grid with Large type works well.
- For a challenge, choose Medium or Hard, a 15 by 15 grid and 20 or more words.
- Pick familiar words. Themes drawn from memories, such as old songs, kitchen tools, hometown names or seasonal events, prompt conversation after the puzzle is finished.
- Mix long and short words. Long words are easier to spot; very short words can hide in many places.
Tips for nursing homes, senior centers and classrooms
- Personalize it. Add the names of the group, the street the home is on, or the day’s theme. Nothing you type leaves your device.
- Make it a group activity. Project the answer key or read clues aloud so those who cannot see the page can still take part.
- Provide good pens. A thick highlighter or soft marker is easier to hold than a thin pen. Many residents prefer to draw a line through the word rather than circling it.
- Use it for spelling. Teachers can paste a weekly spelling or vocabulary list. Early finishers can use the answer key to check their own work.
- Cut down the clutter. The printed page contains only the title, grid and word list, with no menus or ads.
Printing tips
- Choose Scale: 100% and switch Headers and footers off in the print window.
- Letter and A4 are both supported; set the paper size above to match your printer.
- Use portrait orientation. The grid and word list are sized to fit a single page.
- Photocopying works well because everything is black on white. The answer key shading is light grey with a dark outline so it stays visible.
Frequently asked questions
Why did one of my words not fit?
A word will not fit if it is longer than the grid, or if the grid is too crowded. Choose a bigger grid, drop a word, or press Make puzzle again. Any word that could not be placed is listed above the puzzle, so you always know.
Can I use words with spaces, hyphens or accents?
Yes. Spaces and punctuation are ignored in the grid, and accents are simplified, so “Ice-cream” and “café” become ICECREAM and CAFE. The word list shows your original spelling.
Will the same word appear twice by accident?
The maker checks the random filler letters and tries again if they would create an extra copy of one of your words. A short word can occasionally still be found inside a longer one if both are on your list.
How many words can I use?
Up to 40 words, though 10 to 20 makes the best printed page. Words must be at least 3 letters long.
Is this free to use in my classroom or care home?
Yes. Print as many copies as you need. See the terms for details. No sign-up is needed and we do not collect your word lists. See the privacy policy.
